Biography:

A Kayan native from Miri, Sarawak, Aaronn Avit Ajeng is a doctoral candidate at Universiti Malaya (UM). Aaronn is a highly motivated student researcher with a second-upper class honor bachelor degree in Biotechnology from UM. He has excellent written communication abilities, which will aid him in swiftly establishing a positive connection with others. He can also think critically in order to troubleshoot and solve problems quickly.

In 2019, he was nominated for a Japan Science and Technology (JST) travel grant worth 180,000 yen by Prof. Dr. Ling Tau Chuan, whom supervised his undergraduate project, for a mobility programme in Osaka University, Japan, focusing on Bioprocess engineering. He also received extensive training in Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at Tissue Engineering Centre (TEC) Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (PPUKM) and National Orthopaedic Center of Excellence for Research & Learning (NOCERAL), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya (UM) before registering as a Ph.D. student in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Faculty of Science, UM.

He develops an organic fertilizer composed of Bacillus consortium loaded on palm kernel shell biochar that is optimised using response surface methodology (RSM) with the addition of a locally sourced natural polymer to enhance the bioformulation and tests it on oil palm seedlings to determine its efficiency in terms of growth performance and plant stress responses on infertile soils. He is also working on patenting his product. He is scheduled to defend his candidature in August 2022 and submit his doctoral thesis in August 2022.

Within the first two years of his Ph.D. programme, he successfully published four articles as the first author and three articles as a co-author in ISI-indexed journals. Aaronn was able to present his findings at a number of local and international conferences, as well as to communities through knowledge transfer programmes. He also completes an attachment as a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Systems Biology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2022, where he was intensively trained in the field of metabolomics under Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syarul Nataqain Baharum.
